In the world of revenge porn, you don’t want a nude of you ending up online *no matter how perfect the lighting is*. Learn how to send nudes safely.
Now, don’t think I’m some paranoid old lady. Nudes can be spontaneous and fun, just as long as you keep yourself protected. I feared sending someone a naked or half-naked photo of myself. Okay, I know some of you are rolling your eyes. This fear of mine kept me pretty safe. It wasn’t long before some of my friends from school had nudes circulating around without their consent.
How to send nudes without getting burned
If you’re like my friends, you thought you could trust the one you sent it to. You thought they were someone you could give yourself to without them sending it to other people. But this world isn’t full of butterflies. Sometimes, people can be horrible to one another.
I don’t want you to go through that. It’s very traumatizing. Those are photos you took of yourself only for the person you sent them too.
#1 Is this for you or for them? Are you sending nudes to someone because you want to? Or is this because you’re trying to get them interested in you. It’s important you know the difference. Before even considering sending a nude, think about why you want to send one. The last thing you want is to send the nude and feel bad about it. #2 Do you trust the person you’re sending it to? One more thing to think about before you start sending nudes is if you trust the person who’s receiving it. Did you just meet them a couple of days ago? Maybe sending a nude now isn’t the best idea. Take some time to get to know them before you rush into things.
#3 Keep your face out of it. Listen, unless they’re your long-term partner, keep your face out of it. In general, you should keep your face out of it. If a stranger gets a hold of your partner’s phone, they’ll have access to some graphic images. Always make sure your face is out of the shot. Not only is it safer, but it also adds a little mystery to things. [Read: How to do damage control if your nudes got leaked]
#4 Delete your device’s data. Every device will store information on it, including photos. If you’re taking nudes on your phone, it’ll store the EXIF *exchangeable image file* data. This includes GPS coordinates, camera ID, and date and time. Basically, anyone could connect the photo to you, and that’s something you don’t want. Make sure you remove this data from your device.
#5 Use the right app. When it comes to knowing how to send nudes the right way, use the right apps. There are some apps which help to protect sender information. For example, Keepsafe is an app which lets you store private photos and videos on your phone. So, you don’t need to use your gallery. The app will keep those nudes password protected. Snapchat also works, but people can take screenshots. [Read: How to be careful when sending dirty snapchats]
#6 Don’t one-way nude. This is a great way to see the intentions of the person you’re sending your nudes to. If someone is requesting nudes from you, but won’t send you any of theirs, this is a clear sign that something isn’t right. Of course, you can send nudes if you want to, but when sending nudes, it’s a two-way street.
#7 Give your sender compliments. If you’re receiving nudes back from someone, make sure you shoot them a compliment. I mean, as someone who’s taken nudes, it takes a lot of time to prepare the lighting and angle. Paid models don’t even work this hard! So, give a genuine compliment to your sender. They’ll appreciate it. [Read: How to keep growing into a kind human]
#8 Delete the photos. If you have nudes of yourself or other people on your phone, delete them now. You should also ask the recipient to delete your nudes when they’re done with them. A lost phone can result in your nudes being in the hands of the wrong person.
#9 You can take nudes just for you. The beauty of nudes is you can do whatever you want with them. You can take nudes just for your own pleasure. But, you still need to make sure you keep those photos safe. Whether you want to show other people or not, our devices are connected to the internet and are always prone to attack. #10 Treat your partner with respect. Sending nudes isn’t easy to do for most of us. Once we hit send, we get nervous, anxious about whether or not the person will like us. This is why you need to treat the other person with respect. It’s not easy showing your naked body on camera; if it was the porn industry wouldn’t exist. So, let’s have a little respect for each other.
#11 Trust your gut. Before rushing to hit send, what is your gut telling you? Are you feeling good about this person? Or is there something off about them? Whatever your gut is telling you, you need to listen to it. I know it’s hard to put the emotions aside but try to before sending nudes. #12 Know the law. In most countries, having a naked photo of someone who’s 17-years-old or younger is considered child pornography. You need to know who you’re sending and receiving nudes from. If they’re under the age of seventeen, those photos could get you in a lot of trouble. Though you may be chatting with someone for a day or two, you know nothing about them. Age always matters when it comes to nudes.
