Marie Claire Selects Five Fresh Faces for a Series of May Covers
Our forum members are often quite hard on the American edition of Marie Claire but over the past few months, the magazine has delivered some seriously strong covers featuring the likes of Hailee Steinfeld and Reese Witherspoon — and even managed to do Alicia Vikander justice. After finally receiving our forum’s seal of approval, the publication unveils a bold new look with its annual ‘Fresh Faces‘ issue for May 2018. The cover girls include Riley Keough, Katherine Langford, Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi and Sophie Turner, all photographed by Erik Madigan Heck and styled by Joseph Errico for a series of vibrant portraits.
Our forum members weighed in on which covers they’ll be tracking down. “Riley’s got the best cover, and maybe the third girl if they ditched the unnecessary jacket (below, center). The rest are really too much. Art direction is overwhelming, and while I love Erik’s work for UK Harper’s Bazaar, it’s just not working for me here,” commented Benn98.
“I’m thrilled to see Issa Rae!” TheoG applauded.
Forum member Nocturnal wasn’t exactly jumping for joy over the series of covers: “I don’t know them. They look boring!”
“Not one but FIVE boring and generic covers!” scolded Nomar.
“Riley is a fresh face? Please! She gets far more attention than her work is worth. Also, the art direction on these covers make my head hurt,” wrote ThatDudeOverTher.
Also quick to call out the magazine for its new art direction was MON: “Vogue Paris wants her font back!”
“That VP font that every magazine seems to be adopting doesn’t work here – it looks rather cheap in fact. There’s just a bit too much going on,” 333101 pointed out.
