I don’t know about you but I absolutely love homemade potato chips. I love how some are crispy and some of slightly soft. And there is nothing better than a warm chip in my opinion. However since most restaurant chips are deep fried, they aren’t the healthiest option. Luckily it is really easy to make an amazing crispy baked potato chip in your oven. It’s the perfect snack or side dish and can be seasoned in so many different ways.

Depending on your oven and how you cut your chips, here are a few things to keep in mind. If your baked potato chips are all the same thickness, some may cook faster than others. Just keep an eye on them and pull off any cooked chips before they burn. Some people have trouble with their chips sticking to the pan. To avoid that, I recommend using parchment paper or a wire rack. You can also use aluminum foil, just coat it in cooking spray first.

And just in case you are wondering, this recipe absolutely works for homemade baked sweet potato chips.

Are homemade baked potato chips good for you?

Potatoes get a bad rap when it comes to nutrition and healthy eating. However potatoes do contain many nutrients and minerals and can be part of any healthy diet in moderation. Specifically potatoes have potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, copper, and water. Many people think potatoes are unhealthy since normally they are fried in tons of oil or loaded with butter and sour cream. However when they are baked with heart healthy olive oil, like in this recipe, they can be a healthy part of any diet.

Can you make chips in the oven?

You can definitely make potato chips, and all kinds of veggie chips, in the oven. Starchy vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, or butternut squash work best. It is best to cook them at 400 degrees and they will usually take anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on the thickness of the chips. If they are close to 1/8 of an inch, they will take closer to 15 minutes and for 1/4 of an inch, closer to 30 minutes. If your chips are varying thicknesses, just remove the crispy chips as they finish cooking so they don’t burn.

What’s the easiest way to make baked potato chips at home?

Personally I think the easiest way to make baked potatoes chips at home is to grab a mandolin, thinly slice your potatoes into uniform slices, toss them in oil, and bake them for 15-20 minutes. The end result is crispy, delicious potato chips that you can serve warm or cold. This process can also be done with a very sharp knife but is a little harder and more time consuming. Your other option for slicing is a food processor with a slicer attachment, but I find the slices aren’t always uniform.

How do you make crispy potato chips?

The key to crispy chips is to use enough oil to just coat every single chip on both sides, without using too much oil. Using too much oil can cause the chips to burn more easily and become greasy and soggy.

Now is the fun part! Create spice and flavor combinations for your baked potato chips. I like to add the seasoning as soon as the chips come out of the oven. Make sure they are nice and hot so that the seasoning sticks to the hot oil on the chip. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Chili and lime: Toss the chips with chili powder and cumin when they come out of the oven. Then squeeze fresh lime juice over the top. For a true Mexican chip, cover them in hot sauce as well.
  • Parmesan Rosemary: As soon as the chips come out of the oven, sprinkle them with dried rosemary and Parmesan cheese.
  • Ranch: Toss the freshly cooked homemade potato chips with homemade or store bought ranch seasoning.
  • Taco: Do the same as aboev but with taco seasoning instead.
  • Barbecue: For a barbecue style chips, you can use a barbecue rub or a homemade seasoning made with 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp sugar, 1/4 tsp onion powder, and 1/4 tsp chili powder.
  • Nutritional yeast: If you want to add some extra nutrition as well as a Parmesan type flavor, toss the chips with a heart serving of nutritional yeast.
  • Truffle: No one would blame you for drizzling your chips with a touch of truffle oil or using a truffle salt.
  • Furikake: I am obsessed with this Japanese seaweed and sesame seasoning. It tastes incredible on these homemade baked chips.
  • Salt and vinegar: Drizzle the freshly cooked chips with a touch of white or malt vinegar and a good dose of salt.
  • Fresh herbs: If I am serving these chips as a dinner side, I will usually toss them with whatever fresh herbs I have at home along with some lemon juice or Parmesan cheese for a fancier side dish.
