Australia’s Detpak and Veneziano Team Up for Small-Volume Cup LineFFOL Editor 1
The standardization of takeaway cup sizes over the past three decades has been driven by large coffee chains, leaning toward larger volumes perhaps to create the perception of value.
Yet as certain specialty purveyors have embraced more diminutive vessels for customers to enjoy their drinks, particularly those that are espresso-based, there can be some disjunction between in-store drink volumes and to-go drink volumes.
At least that’s the argument made by quality-focused Australian wholesale roastery and coffee consultancy Veneziano Coffee Roasters, which has now lent its name and expertise to a partnership with Australian packaging supplier Detpak for the release of a line of smaller-than-standard paper cups designed to better mimic the in-store beverage experience.
“Currently, take away coffee cups in the market offer no consistency. We tested existing in market products sold as 6-ounce, 8-ounce and 12-ounce, and rarely did they measure accurately. All cups, in fact, were larger than advertised volume by as much as 20 percent,” Veneziano wrote in a recent announcement of Detpak’s Precision Series cups. “Due to takeaway cups being significantly larger in volume than dine-in cups, baristas find it difficult to achieve a consistent taste experience with the recipes they use. Unfortunately, in most cases, extra milk is added to the same espresso volume, resulting in a weaker take-away coffee for the customer.”
Cup volumes for the Precision Series come in sizes of 160 milliliters (5.4 ounces), 200 milliliters (6.7 ounces), 240 milliliters (8.1 ounces) and 320 milliliters (10.8 ounces).
The official cup partner of the World Barista Championship in June, Detpak will be displaying the new Precision line at the upcoming US Barista Championship in Seattle in April, and at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo in March. The company is also currently hosting a “Precision Smackdown Series” being held at numerous coffee venues throughout Australia that gives competitors a chance to win cash prizes and attend various international coffee events.
